This unit assesses the learner’s ability to create fashion-focused hairstyles using thermal styling tools through two practical assessments observed by an assessor.

Prior to assessment, learners must provide evidence of competency using a range of thermal techniques, including full head hot tong styles, flat irons, crimping irons, and hot rollers, as recorded in their training record book.

The practical assessments require learners to:

  • Create one hairstyle using hot tongs only

  • Create one hairstyle using hot rollers, flat irons, crimping irons, or a combination of these tools

All styles must reflect current fashion trends and be developed through a professional consultation that considers the event, direction, parting, shape, and placement of wave, curl, or straight areas. Learners must select a style appropriate to the client’s hair and scalp analysis and apply thermal protection, styling, and finishing products correctly.

Assessment focuses on safe and correct tool use, hair control, sectioning, curl direction, balance, and finish, with services completed within a set timeframe to industry standards.
